2018 m. kovo 1 d., 18:00 val. galerijoje “Ars et mundus” (A. Mapu g. 20, Kaunas) atidaroma Litvakų fotografijos centro vadovo Richard Shofield fotografijų paroda "BACK TO SHUL", skirta įamžinti išlikusį kadaise plačios ir įvairialypės Lietuvos žydų bendruomenės paveldą.
1820-aisiais Abraomas Mapu buvo tik dar vienas paauglys, vaikščiojantis Kauno gatvėmis. Tačiau kitaip nei daugelis – su savimi besinešiojantis žydo tautybę ir besistengiantis tapti nematomas. Tiesa, jis tai įgyvendino ne taip sėkmingai kaip nacionalsocializmo pranašai ir jų patikėtiniai Lietuvoje, kiek daugiau nei po 120 metų sėkmingai iš istorijos puslapių ištrynę 200 tūkst. Lietuvos žydų: vyrų, moterų bei vaikų.
Lietuvoje išlikusios sinagogos yra atminimas kadaise plačios ir įvairialypės žydų bendruomenės Lietuvoje. Priminimas to, kas per ilgus metus buvo pamiršta ir apleista. Rankose laikydamas tik pigų latvišką išmanųjį telefoną, 2017-ųjų metų rugpjūtį Richard Schofield leidosi į 12 dienų trukmės kelionę aplink Lietuvą, siekdamas sukurti atminties dokumentą, žymintį Lietuvos nepriklausomybės akto atkūrimo šimtmetį – metines įvykio, kuriame lietuviškoji žydų bendruomenė suvaidino itin svarbų vaidmenį.
Parodoje „Back to Shul“ yra eksponuojama 30 iš beveik 2000 kadrų, užfiksuotų kelionės metu. Taip pat, pasitelkiant naujųjų technologijų pagalbą, lankytojai gali išvysti daugiau į parodą nepatekusių vaizdų bei išgirsti fragmentą iš „The Kaunas Requiem“ -75 metų ilgio eksperimentinės muzikos produktą, Richardo dedikuotą 75-ųjų Kauno geto įkūrimo metinių paminėjimui.

Didžiojoje Britanijoje gimęs fotografas Richard Schofield Lietuvoje gyvena paskutiniuosius 16 metų. Baigęs prestižinę fotožurnalistikos ir dokumentinės fotografijos magistro programą London College of Communication, Richard yra Tarptautinio litvakų fotografijos centro įkūrėjas ir vadovas. Būdamas impulsyvus keliautojas ir aviacijos pionieriaus Harry Methuen Schofield anūkas, Richard net du kartus buvo atsidūręs šaunamojo ginklo taikiklyje.

In the 1820s when he was still a young teenager living in Kaunas, Abraham Mapu tried and completely failed to make himself invisible. The Nazis and their Lithuanian accomplices had considerably more success some 120 years later when they managed to pull off one of history’s most gratuitously savage vanishing tricks with the murder of over 200,000 Lithuanian Jewish men, woman and children.
Lithuania’s 100 or so remaining former synagogues are among a tiny handful of reminders of the country’s once large and diverse Jewish presence, reminders that sit largely forgotten and neglected. With the aid of nothing more than a cheap Latvian smartphone, in August 2017 Richard Schofield set off on a 12-day journey around Lithuania to document these extraordinary buildings in a small act of remembrance as the country headed towards the 100th anniversary of the re-establishment of its independence, an event in which Lithuania’s Jewish population played a significant role.
This small exhibition curated by Ugnė Vedeikaitė features 30 of the almost 2,000 photographs Richard took during his journey and is accompanied by a slideshow of more images from the trip and a fragment of music from the First Movement of Anton Dehtiarov’s The Kaunas Requiem, a 75-year-long piece of experimental music commissioned by Richard to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Kaunas Ghetto in 2016.
About the author:
Possessing no Jewish or Lithuanian ancestry as far as he’s aware of, the English photographer Richard Schofield has been living and working in Lithuania for the last 16 years. A graduate of the prestigious MA programme in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the London College of Communication where he graduated with a Distinction for a project shot entirely on a technically lamentable Nokia E61i mobile phone, Richard is the founder and Creative Director of the International Centre for Litvak Photography. A compulsive traveller, Richard has been held at gunpoint twice and is the grandson of the pioneering pilot and author Harry Methuen Schofield. Back to Shul is due to be published as an e-book in the next few weeks.
